Letter grades bad. Numerical grades good.

If universities around the world (or at least UCLA) would adopt numerical grades of 2 or 3 digits of precision instead of letter grades, I wouldn't have to deal with emails from 10 students per quarter who think they got hosed.

My law school does numerical grade but the curve is so AWFUL! So we end up getting the shaft anyway.

Although it would provide more precision, it may end up raising more questions as people compare their expected grade versus their actual grade. Given transcripts, it's unfortunate that it's not easier to try various grading schemes though.
